Lord Howe Island Activities - Things to do
If you really want to get away, I mean really get away, there aren’t
many places to go that are as beautiful as Lord Howe Island, and it’s
not over-crowded with residents and tourists. With a population of less
than 400 and a limit of the same amount allow into the area at any given
time, Lord Howe Island is well controlled and preserved. This makes it
the perfect get-away and the landscape is something you will never
forget. So, you get there and realise that you are in the middle of
what could easily be deemed Paradise, but now you wonder what to do.
That’s a simple one. There’s a ton of fun things to do on the Island.
Fishing on Lord Howe Island
There’s enough good fishing to do on the island to keep you busy for
your whole trip; everything from big game sport fish to plate sized
fish. If you are not sure what to do to get started with island fishing,
take a fishing charter for Wahoo, Trevally, Kings fish, Tuna and Cod. If
fishing isn’t your thing, you can always feed the fish instead at Ned's
beach every morning or afternoon. Hiking
Walking and climbing are popular activities on Lord Howe Island.
These jaunts range from short paths to long trail walks covering
everything from the Boat Harbour to the coastal Track to Rocky Run, and
Mount Eliza which provides some amazing views. There are also some more
challenging hikes for those in better shape, like the Mount Gower trail.
The island is not that huge so you can cover a lot of ground fast.
Swimming
Cooling off in the surf is always a great way to cool off and get
some sun. Lord Howe Island has plenty of beaches and you even get the
chance to swim with turtles at Sylph hole. Also along the lines of
swimming is snorkeling on the coral reef and some scuba diving. Ball's
Pyramid, which is a jagged basalt pinnacle rising from the Tasman sea is
a great place to do some diving around this pyramid, or if you prefer,
you can take a scenic flight over it. Surfing
While you’re at the beach, you might want to try your hand at some
surfing. Surfing at Middle Beach or Blinky Beach is a great option.
Kayaking and Boating
Kayaking in a lagoon is a great way to explore exotic marine life and
reef walking, while cruising in a glass-bottom boat over one of the
reefs and do some snorkelling or viewing the aquatic life (who knows,
you might feel like Doris Day). Spend some time sailing around the
island to get to know it better and get more in touch with nature.
Bird Watching
There is plenty of bird watching on the island. You can watch the
flocks of birds return to home at Ned's Beach after a day's fishing.
There are many different types of birds to enjoy including Red-Tailed
Tropicbirds, Sooty Terns, Masked Booby and many more. Plant Life
There is plenty of on the island, and if that is your thing, you
could literally spend days looking at all the flora; everything from
wildflowers to pumpkin trees. Golf
What else needs to be said about this? Tee up for a round of golf in
some of the most scenic landscape you’ve ever set foot on. Scenic
Flights
If all this seems to be a bit much to cover in one trip, just charter
one of the tour planes to take you out and let you get a good look at
everything on the island. Who knows, maybe from there you will be able
to make up your mind as to which activity most appeals to you. |
