Fishing Lord Howe Island

Types of Fishing on Lord Howe Island

So what is our preferred style of fishing: Standard baitcaster or spinning reel? Fly fishing? Trolling? Well, there’s good news for you: it’s all available at Lord Howe Island of the Eastern Coast of Australia.

Game Fishing

First and maybe foremost is the offshore deep sea fishing that’s available. We’re talking about big game sport fish like sailfish and marlin. That’s a good start, right. And, you can fish in closer to the shore for other well known an plentiful species. But the question is, how do you go about catching these fish – what is the best metod?

Of course, the best method in this subtropical area would be a charter because it can save you a lot of time learning where to fish and a good guide can put you on good fish right away.

Close Coastal Fishing (near shore)

If you don’t have the time for a long journey out to sea, or just like to do some coastal fishing, Lord Howe Island will provide that for you, too. Fishing along the fringes of the coast and near the offshore islands can net you some nice fish up to 15 kg. Water of course is not as deep here, but do run to depths up to 30m. This type of fising is excellent for site fishing as the water is normally very clear. In fact, often times you can actually see the fish take you bait. This makes for good fishing for finesse type spinning rods, light tackle and even fly fishermen.

Deep Reef Fishing

Another good way to fish in Lord Howe Island is deep reef fishing. Deep reef fishing is more about a fishing location than fishing for a certain species of fish. Many species are available in deep reef fishing. In this method you are looking for fish which like to hang out below the reefs near the bottom. Don’t misunderstand this, there are plenty of huge fish to be caught in these reefs, including monster kings. You are also just as likely to land some very tasty pan sized fish, so it’s worth spending a little time in the reefs. Jigs work well in these deep reefs.

Lagoon Fishing

Lagoon water will typically run more shallow than reef fishing (5cm to 5m of water), and the water is usually extremely clear and calm. Fishing lagoons is a fishing experience that an avid angler must take the time to enjoy in Australia. The fish aren’t usually extremely large, but they are terrific fighters and run in the 1 to 5kg weight range.

So, it’s plain to see there is plenty of fishing to enjoy in the Lord Howe Island; it’s just a matter of what style you want to participate in. Actually, you should try them all if you have time.
